How Salford Royal is changing the face of healthcare

Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, rated as an Outstanding Trust and nominated as an NHS Global Digital Exemplar (GDE), is one of the UK’s top-performing hospital trusts. Its role as a GDE means it pioneers the use of technology for other “fast follower” NHS trusts to learn from.

From days to milliseconds – speeding the flow of patient data

“The efficiencies that technology can bring to clinical staff and hospital users are immense,” says Rik Wakefield, Salford Royal’s CTO. “Historically, it may have taken hours or days to move information across an organisation of this size, whereas now we can move that information in seconds and milliseconds.”

The trust’s technology projects range from using robotics to improve the safety of dispensing drugs to the deployment of smart home sensors that support the independence of elderly people in their own homes. Central to everything is the secure and seamless movement of patient information across the trust, from hospital to other community healthcare bodies.

“[We’re] really breaking down the barriers between the organisations, allowing clinicians to access their desktop when and where they want to access it,” Wakefield explains of Salford Royal’s virtual desktop project. The project will enable clinicians to access and update patient notes wherever they are: a quiet office at the end of a shift, a busy consulting room between appointments or on a tablet device during ward rounds.

Improving patient experience and outcomes

“[The Citrix Workspace] will improve productivity for Salford Royal,” says Darren Fields, Managing Director of Citrix UK and Ireland. “It will allow the doctors and nurses to access information a lot quicker. And so, when they have that electronic patient record and they can make decisions faster, that gives a much better experience for the patient.”

A better patient experience and better healthcare outcomes

“Where technology is understood and appropriately implemented, I believe it can improve personalised care,” Wakefield says.

“There are benefits in the speed of delivery and the end-user experience,” he continues. “A cloud solution makes us more dynamic. It gives us the ability to quickly stand-up or stand-down new services as they’re required. But it also provides cheaper delivery of services. We’re using systems and solutions that are already in place, rather than paying for expensive new solutions. It means that, rather than using expensive fibre to connect buildings, we can look to use an internet connection, which is much more cost effective.”

Wakefield concludes, “The reward for me is an improved health landscape and outcomes for the citizens of Salford. Ultimately, that’s how we measure ourselves as being successful.”
