As we talk with organizations that are leveraging the Citrix Workspace app for Chrome OS, one thing that comes up often is the difference in graphics performance compared to our other Citrix Workspace app clients. This difference is especially apparent with graphically intensive workloads, like CAD modelling or video editing where mouse movements may lag behind graphics updates.

As part of our continuing effort to improve the user experience for our Citrix Workspace app for Chrome OS customers, we prioritized finding the bottlenecks causing these issues and figuring out how to eliminate them. It’s amazing what you can do within the context of a browser today, and we knew we could take advantage of it to improve the user experience. Needless to say, we found some areas for improvement and optimized those cases.

I’m pleased to share our latest graphics optimizations to Citrix Workspace app for Chrome OS that are part of our 2105.5 release!

Here’s a short video I put together showing the before-and-after difference:

Pay particular attention to the FPS counters in the top corners of the screen. Yes, that’s right, we’re seeing over double the frame rate for improved video quality! There’s also a knock-on effect of better audio because we’ve reduced the CPU requirements for graphics, thereby freeing it to perform other tasks. And this is only the beginning. We have more features planned that will bring the performance of Citrix Workspace app for Chrome OS more in line with our native Citrix Workspace app clients in terms of FPS, multi-monitor support, and more.

The boost in graphics performance is currently available in Citrix Workspace app for Chrome OS (on Chromebooks or as an extension in Chrome), or if the Citrix Workspace app for HTML5 is run from Mozilla Firefox. We plan to make the Citrix Workspace app for HTML5 capabilities available for Chrome browsers and Edge soon.

Check out these enhancements today in the latest version of Citrix Workspace app for Chrome OS. Learn more about Citrix Workspace app for Chrome OS in our product documentation, and stay tuned for more exciting updates coming in our future releases.
