Black History Month at Citrix: The power of our voice

To celebrate Black History Month in 2020, we’re reflecting here at Citrix on the many historical influences of and contributions by black and brown tech professionals. We’re also highlighting the opportunities that diversity in thought and experiences gives us as we look to the future of technology and Citrix.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Enacted in 1870, it gave black men the right to vote after the Civil War. For our theme this year, Citrix’s Black Professionals Network (BPN) chose The Power of our Voice.

Not only does our theme connect with the national Black History Month theme — African Americans and the Vote — it helps us to remember the influence that black professionals have had historically on technological advancements. That includes everything from video games (Gerald Lawson) and safety devices (Garrett Morgan) to 3-D technology (Valerie Thomas) and aeronautical computation (Katherine Johnson) and so much more.

As we look to our future, the need for more black and brown professionals in high tech will only grow. U.S. Census projections show that, by 2050, half of the U.S. population will identify as part of a minority group. And the talent crunch companies across industries face today will only intensify. A global talent shortage of 85 million employees is expected by 2030.

There’s ample opportunity for technology companies to embrace, develop, and advance the voices and ideas of black professionals and other diverse employees. As we continue our focus on diversity, inclusion, and belonging at Citrix, we believe the most exciting time for diversity in technology is upon us.

At Citrix’s offices in Fort Lauderdale, Raleigh, and Santa Clara, we’re celebrating the power of our voice throughout the month of February. From mentoring events and career panels to volunteer opportunities and classes on empowerment and identity, the BPN is providing opportunities for employees to learn, connect, and grow as we show the power of our voice and the impact we can have here at Citrix and beyond.

Employee Resource Groups

The BPN is one of Citrix’s employee resource groups (ERGs). These employee-led, self-organized, Citrix-sponsored groups focus on advancing our vision of equality by supporting and advancing a sense of belonging at Citrix and beyond. Our goal? Support underrepresented groups of employees, helping them to build safe spaces for members, to educate allies, and attract and retain diverse talent. Our current ERGs are:
