I stumbled across a blog post recently that discussed the various remoting protocols out there today. The author suggested that, in terms of graphics remoting, there wasn’t much difference between HDX and RDP.
My initial reaction to this was something akin to “you couldn’t be further from the truth!” followed shortly by my inner voice confirming the benefits of HDX over RDP. I stopped, took a step back and realised that actually, yes, in a lot of scenarios, each offers a good user experience, scales well and is supported by a plethora of devices and platforms. Dig a little deeper, though, and you’ll find HDX is evolving to tackle the more challenging scenarios, whether it’s helping a healthcare worker in a remote part of India or a 3D motorsport engineer making track-side modifications without risking theft of sensitive IP, HDX is optimized for all scenarios.
One aspect I’m particularly proud of is HDX’s bandwidth usage compared to other protocols. Bandwidth, after all, is not free! Take, for example, my current personal situation: Because of some ongoing home renovations, we’re currently living in an apartment and have a 12GB/month mobile data plan to see us through the next few months (it’s only in these times that you realise how much data you actually blow through!) I often log on in the evenings, and use HDX not just from the perspective of “eating our own dog food,” but also because it saves me money (money that can be put towards that kitchen we’ve always wanted 😉).
On that note, I thought I’d share what I’ve been up to over the past few weeks. I got side-tracked (yes, that seems to happen a lot these days, but I’m very appreciative of Citrix giving me opportunities to “explore”), and ended up redesigning some of the character recognition stuff I added a few releases back. I’ve put together a short video showing where we started and where we are today:
P.S. Before you ask: CPU usage is the same as 7.18 (possibly slightly less after some further tuning), text quality is still pixel-perfect (lossless). No Receiver changes.
